Psalm 16:8-10 - Decay? No Way!

Our lives are wrapped up in promises. We promise to pay our mortgages, we promise to pay our credit cards, we promise to show up for a sporting event, we promise to remain faithful to our spouses, we promise our children a visit, we promise to hand in an assignment. We promise and promise again. What is also true is that our lives are a trail of broken promises.

The mournful eyes of a spouse acknowledging infidelity. The hurt eyes of children looking at parents who once again did not keep a promise. The guilt and anger at a home foreclosed or the feeling of being overwhelmed when the bill comes outlining debt. Maybe it is the shame from procrastinating once again, and in so doing, failing someone else, yourself or God.

10 Because you will not abandon me to the grave,
nor will you let your Holy One see decay. (Psalm 16:10)

For our sin; our broken promises, our lies, our deceit and our hidden hatreds Jesus suffered hell in our place. We are not abandoned to hell in just punishment for our filth because Christ was abandoned to suffer hell for us:

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. (Hebrews 2:9)

Jesus tasted death for you and me. He paid the ultimate price for our sins. He was tormented. He suffered separation from his Father. He experienced the filth of evil, the stench of sin, and the horror of hopelessness. He did this because of a promise he made. A promise that he kept. He, the Holy One, did not see decay. No. He rose. He lives, and he gives us life. He gives us joy. He gives us forgiveness. He promises us eternal pleasures with him in heaven. He is always with us, just as he promised:
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (Matthew 28:20b)

What is my response to this promise made and kept by our loving LORD?
8 I have set the LORD always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure. (Psalm 16:8-9)
